Meta Going After ChatGPT – Why The H*ck Is Everyone Working On AI?
Two years ago, VR was hyped; So Meta, Apple, MS, Google, & Amazon joined in. Now it's AI.
⏱️ Happy Monday!! Too lazy to read for 4 minutes? Here’s the TLDR Summary:
∞ Meta is working on a GPT-4 rival, according to The Wall Street Journal.
📄 The list of companies working on AI includes Google, Apple, Microsoft, Tesla, Amazon, and now, Meta.
💵 These companies have a collective market cap of $10 trillion.
👓 Meta started a VR hype, so all these companies joined in. Now OpenAI did it again.
🟢 Yet, there is a secret winner out of all of this—Nvidia.
🧠 My clientele working on AI-related businesses has doubled this year.
🗣️ I noticed over a hundred comments on my Medium articles are contradictory when it comes to AI, so here’s a question for you — AI, hyped or not? Let me start with my opinion: it’s not. (Comment below, it’ll be fun.)
Meta Going After ChatGPT.
It makes sense, doesn’t it? Meta has 3.88 billion users. If there’s something that threatens their existence, then they might as well work on developing a better version of it.
But does it really “threaten its existence”? The only thing that I’ve seen as an integration of social media and ChatGPT is a Southpark episode of someone using ChatGPT to answer his girlfriend.
Yet AI models are not really specific to chatbots, are they? Meta intends to use it “to accelerate the development of so-called generative AI tools that can produce humanlike expressions.”
It’s expected to be released after Google’s hyped Gemini that forced Sergey Brin, their co-founder, to get back to the office. But the case of Gemini is slightly different as they’re more direct competitors with ChatGPT compared to Meta.
Gemini, Llama, GPT, Apple GPT, Amazon’s FMs — I can keep typing random letters for hours, but it’s getting confusing, wouldn’t you think? Everyone’s AI-ing, and it’s hard to keep up. So let’s take a breather and review who amongst the top tech companies is working on AI.
Remind Me—Who’s Doing AI These Days?
At this stage, I wouldn’t be surprised if my neighbor’s dog is working on a generative AI model. Everyone is doing it.
Google
I believe that Google is in a very bad situation at the moment. ChatGPT threatened their search engine, which is, believe it or not, 72% of their revenue stream.
A few articles and videos here and there showed that ChatGPT could actually answer questions that people usually ask Google without those confusing ads.
Reading this sentence out loud, it makes sense that Google is freaked out. They’ve released Bard, which is not to be compared with ChatGPT’s quality of text generation.
Yet, they’re working on Gemini, a GPT-4 competitor that they’re hyping up a lot.
Apple
Really? Why you? Just stick with your iPhones! We don’t need an Apple GPT bot.
Supposedly, the AI models that they’re spending millions on could interact with AppleCare customers or automate tasks with Siri.
Microsoft
They invested $13 billion in OpenAI. That’s quite large compared to the OpenAI’s valuation. But nothing compared to the revenue of Microsoft ($204 billion) or Google ($282 billion).
Honestly, I’m interested to see how Copilot will go. Copilot is basically ChatGPT + Office. So I could just ask for a presentation in a specific style, and it would auto-build.
But I’m not putting my hopes up for this that much. It might flop.
Tesla
Elon Musk can’t watch the AI train passing without jumping on board. He’s creating xAI, an entity that shows the “truth” about AI.
Nevertheless, Tesla is incorporating AI every day to achieve full self-driving smoothness and perfection. A car that does not need a human to drive it is the objective, and AI is the means.
Amazon
Most recently, they added generative AI to summarize reviews from people. Something that looks like this:
Meta
Then there’s Meta, the not-so-latest addition to the group.
This Happened Two Years Ago With VR.
The tech world kind of feels like a dramatic movie. Someone does something; everyone freaks out.
Meta rebranded itself and focused on virtual reality. Then, almost every tech company worked on augmented or virtual reality. This tells you something. The world is highly affected by trends.
Every single company does not want to be the Nokia of their time. So they’d rather spend millions on hype than watch everyone grow without them.
OpenAI started a new movement with ChatGPT as well. Again, the top tech companies are now following the train.
There’s a single company that’s having a huge benefit from all this AI talk. Their market cap increased by almost one trillion dollars. Do you have a guess? It’s Nvidia.
Meta themselves are ordering chips from Nvidia to be able to do what they need in the world of AI. If AI is the train, then Nvidia is the fuel.
Hype Or Not.
Professionally, I’ve noticed that many clients approach me with AI requests. So I feel it growing. But I’m just one person; I wrote an article about GPT and Google recently. Then I started reading the comments.
Let me show you some of them. It’ll be fun.
Summarizing over 140 comments (I could’ve used Amazon’s AI here): Many people think that AI is hyped. Many others think that it’s “here to stay.”
What do you think? Let’s make this article a bit interactive. Write a comment, and let’s discuss.
